Apollos Speech and Debate
ABOUT US
Apollos is a Christian speech and debate club for homeschool students in the Plano/Murphy/Sachse/Allen, TX area. We support the missions of the homeschool speech and debate league, the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA). Apollos teaches NCFCA and participates in NCFCA tournaments and events. Students are welcome to also participate in Stoa, another Christian Homeschool league.
The mission of our club is to train students to be critical thinkers and strong communicators who know what they believe and why they believe it. Our ultimate goal is to know God and to make him known through our words, attitudes, and actions. (1 Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”)
Our club name is derived from Acts 18:24-28:
“Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.”
Apollos, a bold, world-class speaker, was humbly willing to be corrected and taught by two blue-collar workers. We never want to see a student get "smarter than God", but rather, we'd like to see them develop their skills to excellence and use them humbly in the Lord's service.
